PosBoatSailSkipper Race 1 Race 2 Total
1 Island Lark 16 21 3
2 Jay Dee 15 44 8
3 Mystery 8 63 9
4 Island Bird 4 56 11
5 Island Blossom 9 111 12
6 Silver Heel 2 85 13
7 Patricia 19 311 14
8 Spirit of Wyetown 18 97 16
9 Edmee S 20 711 18
10 Persistence 12 1011 21

There was plenty of steady wind in the morning for the first race, a marathon from the mark “E” all the way back up the river into Langford creek and back. Jay Dee got the gun for the first race.

The wind picked up more in the afternoon for the second race. Island Lark got the gun. Edmee S. was unable to start on time and scored a DNS, Island Blossom capsized during the race scoring a DNF, Patricia capsized during the race scoring a DNF, and Persistence was DSQ’d due to a protest by Patricia for a port-starboard issue.

The Protest Committee made the decision to throw out Race 3 due to a number of protests against the Race Committee for setting the “B” mark too close to shallow water, causing three log canoes to run aground. The mark, set far up the Chester river past Cliffs Point, was in water too shallow for anyone to react in time — Island Lark was the first to round and quickly ran aground, Jay Dee tacked away in time and gained a huge lead, Mystery ran aground and capsized, and Silver Heel piled on top of her, nearly capsizing as well. All crews stayed unhurt. It was still a tight race for the remaining canoes, with Jay Dee edging out Island Lark by a nose at the finish.

Special thanks to the Russians for adding their own flavor to the Chester — is that caviar and vodka and a ham sandwich I taste?

There was one race on Saturday to start off the season, starting at 2:10pm, the course was 8.26nm long. Out of 14 boats, 10 competed. Island Lark took the first gun of the season! Mystery capsized before the start scoring a DNS, Persistence capsized during the race scoring a DNF, Spirit of Wye Towne broke her rudder and dropped out scoring a DNF, and Edmee S. dropped out on the last leg. Noddy, Billie P. Hall, Oliver’s Gift, and Silver Heel did not compete this weekend.

Two races were held on Sunday. The first started at 10:10am over a 6.26nm course; only 9 of the 14 canoes competed. Island Blossom got the gun! Island Bird and Persistence both capsized before the start scoring DNS, and Spirit of WyeTowne was unable to race due to her broken rudder. Magic capsized toward the end of the race and was also out for the next one.

The last race started at 2:10pm over a 4.21nm course; 8 of the 14 canoes competed. Island Lark got the gun for the second time this weekend! Island Bird capsized before the race scoring a DNS, Edmee S. was unable to compete for lack of crew, Magic was towed in after the first race, and Spirit of Wyetowne capsized next to a mark scoring a DNF.

Carl Greibel accepted for Island Lark the John E. Baybutt perpetual trophy for the overall winner of the 4th of July series — a trophy donated by Louis and Betsy Jallade in memory of Betsy Jallade’s father, Dr. John Baybutt, a founding figure in MRYC and Log Canoe racing.

Special thanks to Jeannie Wilson (Miss Jeannie) for all of her help and support, and for providing the race results!
